Throw Back...Monday? Taste Testing the New Spice Mixes at the Spice Shop

Savory Spice Shop is a glorious place.  But you knew that.  Really, though, it is a glorious place.  Every month they have some special event, and in the month of August, they did a tasting night for their three new Caribbean and Latin spice mixes.  Basically, Dave and his awesome staff made delicious food, and we and the other patrons got to eat it.  And, of course, we felt super cool being in the store after hours.

Dave explaining the schedule of the night

The menu was as follows:

Hibiscus Tea

Elizabeth: Light, refreshing, and yummy!

Michel:  A nice amount of flavor without being too sweet.

Coconut-Lime Cucumber Salsa

Elizabeth:  Everyone knows that I do not like coconut, but occasionally I will find something with coconut in it that I enjoy, mainly because it doesn't taste like coconut.  This is one of those dishes.  It was really light and delicious, and the coconut comes from the coconut-lime simple syrup, so it's not overpowering at all.

Michel:  This was really good, although I was a little disappointed that there were no coconut shavings in it.

Elizabeth:  I was not.

Dave letting us smell the mole sauce.

Mike's Mole de Pollo

Elizabeth:  The best chicken mole in Houston is at 100% Taquito.  Go eat it.  Trust me.  You can thank me later.  I have to say, this mole recipe came pretty darn close.  Delicious.

Michel:  This was very similar to the 100% Taquito mole.  Many people at the event paired the mole with the Coconut-Lime Cucumber Salsa.  I did not try this because I was unable to slow down enough while eating the mole to add anything to it.

Chicken mole!

Juicy Cuban Island Marinade on Grilled Pineapple

Elizabeth:  I LOVED this.  The marinade created the most beautiful char on the pineapple, which was hot and juicy.  Once I figure out how to work our grill, I will be making this and eating all of it.

Michel:  Just awful.

Elizabeth:  Which is why I will eat all of it.  (Michel doesn't like pineapple...can you tell?)

What was left of the pineapples

Merkén Spiced Dipping Sauce

Elizabeth:  Oh so wonderfully delicious and creamy.  It should be eaten on all the things.  Especially the steak sandwich.

Michel:  Agreed.  Despite sounding like it has something to do with pubic wigs, this dip is excellent.

Elizabeth: (whispers) Life-changing...

Michel: Particularly when paired with the next item.

Chacarero Chilean Steak Sandwich

Elizabeth:  This is going on our weekend dinner list for those nights when we don't want to go out but we  don't want to eat left overs.  The weekend needs special food.  This sandwich with the dipping sauce is special weekend food.  Ah-mazing.

Michel:  This is the sort of sandwich that will impress party guests because despite being a sandwich, it tastes fancy.

Who wouldn't want to eat that?

Jamaican Jerk Marinade on Grilled Chicken

Elizabeth:  Spicy goodness.  Maybe a bit too spicy for me, but wonderful flavors.

Michel:  Having never been to Jamaica, I can only speculate here.  But I think they nailed the Jerk spice.

JJ's Mexican Brownies

Elizabeth:  I thought I'd died and gone to heaven.  Slightly spicy, very cinnamony brownies?  Yes, please.

Michel:  I ate about 14 of these.  In the pantheon of desserts, brownies are second only to pie, and these brownies almost cross into pie territory.  I have no higher words of praise.

All we can say is, Dave and Co., this was deliciously awesome!  We can't wait for your next tasting night!
